Compact trailing/subshrub with glossy, oval-green leaves and abundant tubular, upturned flowers shaped like tiny leaping goldfish; blooms are vivid orange-red (Koi Red) mainly spring–fall. Excellent in hanging baskets or as a shelf plant for bright indoor color.
Care & Growing Condition:
- Light: Bright, indirect light; tolerates some morning sun but avoid hot direct afternoon sun which scorches leaves. Too little light reduces flowering.
- Temperature: 65–80°F (18–27°C) best; avoid below ~55°F (13°C).
- Watering: Keep evenly moist but not waterlogged. Water when top 1–2 in (2–5 cm) of soil feels dry. Reduce frequency slightly in winter. Avoid letting roots sit in water.
- Humidity: Prefers moderate to high humidity (50%+). Mist occasionally, use a pebble tray, or group with other plants.
- Soil & potting: Fast-draining, light mix (houseplant or African violet mix) with good aeration. Use a shallow pot for hanging baskets.
- Fertilizer: Balanced liquid fertilizer at half strength every 2–4 weeks during active growth (spring–early fall). Hold back in winter.
- Pruning & training: Pinch back tips after flowering to encourage bushiness and more blooms; trim leggy stems.
- Propagation: Easily propagated from stem cuttings in water or a light potting mix; root in 2–4 weeks.
- Pests & problems: Watch for mealybugs, aphids, spider mites. Leaf drop or reduced blooms often from low light, overwatering, or cold drafts. Brown leaf edges indicate low humidity or inconsistent watering.
- Blooming tips: Provide consistent bright light, regular feeding, and slightly cooler nights in autumn (if possible) to encourage heavier flowering.
