Succulent perennial in the stapeliad group, grown for its enormous, star-shaped flowers. Stems are fleshy, quadrangular or cylindrical, green to grey-green, up to several feet long in vining or sprawling habit. Flowers are large, flat star-shaped, textured/hairy, reddish-brown to orange with mottling, and emit a strong carrion-like odor to attract fly pollinators.
Care & Growing Condition:
-
Light: Bright light to strong indirect sun. Tolerates some morning or late-afternoon direct sun; avoid hot midday sun that can scorch stems in summer.
-
Watering: Water sparingly. In active growth (spring–early fall) water thoroughly then allow soil to dry out partially between waterings. In winter or cooler months reduce water significantly (near-dry rest) to avoid root rot.
-
Humidity: Prefers higher humidity levels but adapts well to typical indoor environments. Mist occasionally or use a humidifier if air is very dry.
-
Temperature: Best kept between 60–85°F
-
Soil: Use a very well-draining, gritty succulent mix (cactus mix amended with extra perlite/pumice or coarse sand). Good drainage and aeration are essential.
-
Fertilizer: Feed every month during the growing season (spring to early fall) with a balanced liquid fertilizer diluted to half strength.
